Sycamore Trail Park | Black History & The Underground Railroad

The City of Westerville, through the Parks and Recreation Department, has designed and implemented a new park located at the corner of Polaris Parkway and Africa Road. Sycamore Trail is thoughtfully designed to honor the individuals who bravely navigated the Underground Railroad to find freedom and Westerville’s place in that history.

The Neighborhood Design Center (NDC) developed a robust engagement and outreach strategy to solicit broad community input in an effort to enhance the overall park experience. Focused primarily on producing the enrichment storytelling text content and assisting with the call for artists and requests for proposals. We partnered with consultants, Historical Analyst Valerie Boyer and OSU Associate Professor Karen Lewis.
