Summer Outreach in Full-Swing on the Hilltop

ColumbusNDC

Representing much of Columbus’ West Side, the Hilltop is a historic neighborhood with beautiful homes, intriguing topography, and a business district along W. Broad Street. As part of its focus on neighborhoods, the City of Columbus is investing in a plan for the neighborhood—focusing on people, place, and home.

With support from the Department of Neighborhoods, the Neighborhood Design Center is attending community festivals, markets, civic meetings, and other special events over the summer months to speak with people about the Hilltop Community Plan. So far, we’ve been at the Westgate Farmer’s Market, Hilltop 5K, Hilltop Bean Dinner, and Summer Jam West. We have many more engagements planned over the coming months, including a kick-off meeting in September and monthly meetings occurring through spring 2019.

We have introduced the planning process and timeline to nearly 200 residents and look forward to meeting many more people as the summer progresses. Interacting with residents enables the planning team to understand what is on people’s minds and will be instrumental to informing later phases of the planning process. Issues raised during the summer months will be recorded and presented to the community at fall events and will help shape conversations at future meetings.

The Hilltop Community Plan is based on three pillars of community:

  1. People – Focus on physical and emotional health, education, employment, and income

  2. Place – Focus on businesses, safety, mobility, and recreation

  3. Home – Focus on all aspects of housing: economic integration, quality, affordability, home ownership, and landlord/tenant relationships
