Next Home:2021 Design Competition
2021
Developed by the NDC in partnership with the Central Ohio Community Improvement Corporation and City of Columbus Land Redevelopment Division, the Next Home: 2021 Design Competition challenged design and construction professionals to devise forward-thinking strategies and high-quality design solutions to enable greater housing access to residents of Columbus and Franklin County. The competition tasked the design community to propose a design buildable for $170K in response to creating a new housing type that could serve a variety of users and produce one solution in response to the unprecedented growth expected in the region.
With 32 submissions, a jury of nine jurors awarded the following proposals:
- First Place Award: “Felix House” by Tim Lai Architects
- Second Place Award: “MILhaus” by Team of Archall, CK Consultants, Compton Construction, and Rise Home Builders
- Third Place Award: Untitled Proposal by Gunzelman architecture + interiors
- Honorable Mention Award: “ADUPlex” by WSA Studios
- Honorable Mention Award: Untitled Proposal by the team of Bonnie Kyle, Hannah Namenyi, and Kyle Coxe.
While no houses were constructed under the competition umbrella, the proposed concept by Archall did yield over a dozen new homes under the Land Trust program. These homes can be found in the Hilltop neighborhood in West Columbus and in the City of Whitehall. Additional project support was provided by American Institute of Architects, Columbus, and the Building Industry Association of Central Ohio.
